Reformation Sunday

Worship with Holy Communion: 9 a.m.

The Collect/Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, by the preaching of your servants the reformers you made the light of the Gospel shine clearly. Grant that we may know its saving power, faithfully defend it against all enemies, and joyfully proclaim it, for the salvation of all, and the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Lessons

Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 46; Romans 3:19-28; John 8:31-36

Today is Reformation Sunday. The liturgy this morning is based on Martin Luther's Deutsche Messa ("German Mass"). This is one of two liturgies that Luther wrote (the other is his Latin Mass). In his German Mass Luther encouraged congregation singing by using older hymns, or writing new hymns for the various parts of the liturgy, such as the Kryrie, the Gloria, the Creed, the Sanctus, and the Agnus Dei.

The Kyrie: (Sung to the tune of Amazing Grace)

The Creed: (Sung to the tune of Immortal, Invisible)

The Agnus Dei: (Sung to the tune of My Faith Looks Up to Thee)

Hymns *

Gathering hymn: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Closing hymn: LSB 582, God's Word Is Our Great Heritage
